Memorial for murdered homeless

Sunday afternoon at the Civic Center Plaza, an interfaith memorial service was held for Randy Ferris, 65, Walter Jones, 61, and Rodney Diffendal, the three homeless men who were killed on the morning of March 15, 2020 as they were resting in their tents on B Street near San Diego City College. Faith leaders read from sacred texts, leading prayers for the deceased as well as the living. they include Father Joe Carroll, Rabbi Scott Meltzer, the Very Reverend Penelope Bridges, Yusef Miller, Rev. Kurt Christensen, Peter Navarro, and Pastor Chris Nafis. City councilman Stephen Whitburn attended as well, maintaining a silent vigil. The Voices of Our City Choir sang several pieces, including ‘Love, Rescue Me,’ ‘Change the World’ and ‘Amazing Grace.’ Friends and relatives of the deceased told stories, some of them breaking down in tears as the spoke. Sherry Kruska, sister of Diffendal, was embraced by three other relatives after she finished speaking. Two men in wheelchairs, Duane and Jesse, sat solemnly together during the service, each with their left broken leg wrapped and elevated. They had been there on the morning of crash, and were injured, but survived. The tunnel where it happened is still covered in chalk dedications to the fallen. Here are some images from the event.
